When you work a crew of 4

What changes for you.

  1. The play clock is yours. Announce five, then verbalize four, three, two, one.
  2. Half distance, automatic first down and loss of down come to you — that's the Back Judge's job in a crew of 5.
  3. Kickoff: you're at the receivers' 10 on the press box side, not the goal line in the middle. Your Linesman mirrors you at the 10 opposite.
  4. Punt: the Umpire goes deep with the returners, so the interior is empty. Widen your own clean-up behind the kick.
  5. Field goal and try: the wing on your side releases to an upright, so you have less help on the line of scrimmage.
